Planning Your Getaway

With history deeply rooted in cowboy and Comanche heritage, the wide open plains offers a memorable getaway. Day trips, local museums, outdoor hunting, hiking, shopping at local boutiques, local entertainment, dining, and more, provide an adventure for all ages.

As you drive west on Highway 287 between Vernon and Quanah, four hills rise south of the road. These ancient eroded hills, or the “Medicine Mounds,” have been landmarks for generation after generation of human inhabitants of the region. Medicine Mounds Ranch is a privately-owned cattle ranch that encompasses just over 20,000 acres in Hardeman County, including the historic Medicine Mounds. Medicine Mounds Ranch offers a wide variety of wildlife for hunting and fishing.

Near the ranch is the ghost town of Medicine Mound and the Stermer homestead. The rock buildings in these photos are in Medicine Mound, while the frame building and implements are on the Stermer homestead.

The Downtown Medicine Mound Museum preserves the history of the town and its pioneer families.

When you escape the city lights, the night skies seem endless out west. Stargazing is a unique experience you’re sure to enjoy at Copper Breaks State Park (12 miles South of Quanah), an International Dark Sky location. Star walk events scheduled through the park, provide the perfect family outing!

If you want to experience and view the buffalo roaming the plains, we recommend taking a day trip to Quitaque to visit Caprock Canyons State Park. And as you make your way there, you can stop through Turkey, Texas – the home of Bob Wills, the King of Western Swing.

For evening entertainment, local singers/songwriters frequent the local Old Bank Saloon across the street from The Dixie Star Suite in downtown Quanah, providing the perfect evening out for dining and a place to grab a cold beverage. There’s so much to experience out west … we hope you choose to explore, shop, and stay with us.
